Are you planning a trip to Girona? If yes, keep reading and check out the best things to do and see and why Girona is worth visiting!

The small city in northern Catalonia has a well-preserved medieval old town and many eye-catching monuments worth exploring, all within easy walking distance! It is, therefore, also a perfect day-trip destination from Barcelona.

However, I recommend staying at least one night to enjoy and soak up the atmosphere of this beautiful city.

This travel guide will bring you closer to the best things to do and see in Girona, the best museums, and some of the top activities in and around Girona!

Best Things to Do and See in Girona

#1 Cross the Eiffel Bridge

View of the red iron bridge in Girona Spain

Did you know Gustav Eiffel constructed this vivid red bridge just before the Eiffel Tower was built? For this reason, the Eiffel Bridge, whose original name is “Pont de les Peixateries Velles”, is one of the best things to see in Girona!

The pedestrian bridge connects “Rambla de la Llibertat” (Old Town) and “Carrer de Santa Clara” (Commercial Area), making it an excellent place to cross over while marveling at the outstanding Colorful Houses on the river Onyar. It certainly is a perfect spot for a holiday picture!

#2 Take in Stunning Views of the Colorful Houses of Girona

View of Colorful Houses at the river Onyar in Girona

Marvel at the brightly painted buildings along the river Onyar that guarantee one of the most iconic sceneries of Girona, especially with the Cathedral in the background.

You can get the best views from Stone Bridge(Pont de Pedra), Eiffel Bridge (Pont de les Peixateries Velles), St. Agusti Bridge (Pont de Sant Agusti), and Princess Bridge (Pont d’en Gómez).

If you want to see how one of these beautiful houses looks from the inside, you can do so! House “Casa Masó,” constructed by architect Rafael Masó, is open to the public. Find more information about visits here.

#3 Visit Girona Cathedral

Front view of Girona Cathedral

The most eye-catching monument of the city is the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona (Catalan: Catedral de Santa Maria de Girona). Opening Hours

Together with the square and stairs leading up to the Cathedral, it is undoubtedly the most breathtaking place you will see in Girona.

To all Game of Thrones fans, don’t miss out on this tour, where you can compare shots from the series with the actual shooting location, as it will make your visit even more unique and unforgettable!

#4 Take a Break at Independence Square

Wide square with terraces in Girona

Independence Square is a large yet cozy square surrounded by restaurants, bars, cafés, and attractive buildings! It has a lot of atmosphere, making it an ideal place to spend time with your family or friends.

On a pleasant day, you can sit outside, enjoy a lovely “Copa de Vino Tinto” (Glass of red wine), and watch daily life. Quickly note how everyone is making the most of a beautiful day.

For all history buffs, in the middle of the square, you will spot a statue commemorating soldiers who fell for the defense of Girona in 1808 and 1809.

#5 Explore the Arab Baths

A fascinating piece of history worth exploring is the Arab Baths, built by the Moors in the 12th century. In fact, it is an excellent example of the cultural stages that Girona went through over many centuries.

And even though it is a relatively short visit – approximately 30 minutes – it is still an interesting site. At the entrance, you will get a guide leaflet that provides information about the various rooms and the upper level, from where you’ll have lovely views of the old town.

Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday from 10:00 – 18:00 / Sundays and Bank Holidays from 10:00 – 14:00

#6 Explore the Streets of the Jewish Quarter

A street with many stairs in the Jewish quarter in Girona

The Jewish Quarter, also known as “El Call,” is one of Europe’s best-preserved Jewish quarters.

Stroll through narrow medieval alleys, courtyards, and stone archways, where you will feel like stepping back into time.

For the best experience, join this 3-hour guided tour and get to know the most picturesque corners, as well as a visit to the Museum of Jewish History!

#7 Walk the Walls of Girona

Panoramic view of the old town of Girona

For most visitors, this is one of their favorite things to do in Girona!

The city walls are a historical site, offering excellent panoramic views of the old town, also known as “Barri Vell”, and, of course, the Cathedral.

Along the narrow road, there are multiple towers to climb to get an even better view of the city and its landscapes surrounded by mountains.

The walls are free to visit and accessible 24 hours a day. However, if you go in Summer, I recommend going in the early morning before the heat sets in or the late evening to enjoy a beautiful sunset. You should also wear comfy shoes, bring some water, and a repellent.
